Create a Bar Chart in Excel

Your goal

You have categorical data with associated numerical values, and you need to create a bar chart in Excel.

If you have only categorical data and you need to generate counts, you will need to create a frequency table before you can create the bar chart.

Step-by-step tutorial

Here's the market capitalization for the so-called FAANG stocks (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google) as of September 2, 2020:

To create a bar chart, select the two columns and choose the Insert tab. Then choose either Recommended Charts or else the Column Chart icon. (Excel uses the terminology column chart for a vertical bar chart, and bar chart for a horizontal bar chart.) We'll use the Column Chart icon here:
