# Calculate Kurtosis in Excel

## Your goal

You need to calculate the kurtosis of univariate data
`Y`_{1}, `Y`_{2}, …, `Y`_{N}.

## Step-by-step tutorial

Excel has the `KURT`

function for (excess) kurtosis.

Let's use the Titanic dataset, which contains the list of passengers for the ill-fated voyage. We'll measure the kurtosis of the age variable.

First we use Excel's Filter feature (Data > Filter) to filter out values where the age is unknown
(i.e., filter out the `?`

entries).

Now we apply the `KURT`

function to the `age` column to calculate its kurtosis:

The result is 0.1510.
